"We traditionally consider the beginning of a new year to be a time to start something new in our lives.”  What a marvelous thing that we try to improve.  Certainly we fail to reach all of our goals, but the critical thing is that we keep trying, because if we improve at all, it is a victory!

Improving ourselves requires a deep personal desire and conviction, but it also requires help from others.

I encourage you with all the energy of my heart that you will include God in your attempts to overcome the obstacles in your life and to improve your situation.  Why would you not include someone who is so wise, so concerned about your welfare, and so capable of opening up opportunities for you?   There is no better coach available.  In your quest to make changes in your life, get on your knees and talk to Him, find quiet time to listen to Him, listen to His word in the scriptures and at church, give up those bad habits you know are wrong.  Your ability to deal with the stress of life will improve.

The church is providing a program where you can receive help in improving your life.  It is called the Self Reliance program.   It has been very successful in helping people all over the world and is now available in our area.  It is a 12 week course held at the Stake Center beginning in February.  Areas of help include personal finance, improving job prospects, finding a job, starting or growing a business, personal management.   All are welcome to participate.  If you are interested, please contact Bishop Merrill.  For more information go to www.lds.org and search on "self-reliance".

Wise Use of Technology
Always have a purpose, never wander the internet or TV channels casually.
Remember, everything you do on the internet is recorded. There is no anonymity.  If you would not mind your actions on the internet to be front page news, then proceed.  They could be some day.
Never use the internet if you are bored, lonely, discouraged, or angry.
Select a background screen image that reminds you of what is important to you, put pictures around the computer desk (family, grandkids, God, etc).
Be willing to give up “fun” and “popular” in order to stay clean; delete offending apps (Facebook, Instagram, snap chat, etc).
Be accountable, have someone review your usage (computer in family area, spouse has all passwords and reviews regularly).
Use filters and restrictions (they can’t stop you, but they will remind you of what you thought was important when you were thinking more clearly).
Remember that we are all connected, your actions will affect someone else.
Managing Technology Use with Children
Never lie to yourself, “My kids are good, I don’t need to do this stuff.”
Set boundaries, they want boundaries even if they complain about them.
Set time limits on the use of the internet, computers, TVs, and gaming consoles.
Set up as much filtering and restrictions as possible.
No internet in bedroom or other private places.
Phone is docked in parent’s room at night.
Buy them an alarm clock to wake them up, not the smartphone.
       Parents have all passwords (accountability).
Parents review text and social media accounts, etc.
Children and preteens do not need a smart phone.
Pornography is so easy to find.  Why would you facilitate that?

"The Hundred Dresses", please read it before the activity, then pass the book along to another friend who can read it before the activity.

High Priests
As we end a year in peace and love for our families, our hearts swell as we reflect on our silent nights of warmth, cheer, and amazing tapestry of family, friends, and neighbors. We see the noise of the world, and we hopefully recognize we have been given much, especially as we are reminded of all our blessings daily and "even greater things, yet to come."  May we look up to HIM, and what we can do, then next to us, in our "Favorites," to our neighbors to see where we can "Lift Where We Stand." One step at a time, one day at a time, moving forward in faith, each day, forgiving ourselves, forgiving our family members, those that may have offended us. Empowered with truth, being happy, let our heart be filled love, hope as HE LIVES, and continually finding the joys of life.  The Lord has said, "I, the Lordam bound when ye do what I say; but when ye do not what I say, ye have no promise." Move forward with that promise.

Lesson Schedule for January:

Elders
Welcome to a new year in the Elders quorum!  We have had some great experiences over the past year: excellent quorum discussions, multiple service experiences like Deseret Mills packing, cleaning the church, cleaning the temple, cleaning the conference center, volunteering for the Bountiful Community homeless people and let’s not forget snow removal.  I for one will be grateful for the 7th ward’s efforts with snow removal in 2018!

By far my favorite service of the year was providing service for our very own elders in a day of service this past September.  We cut down trees, cleaned the church and hauled off multiple truck loads to the dump.  We would like to do it again in 2018 so be thinking of ways we can help each other out again once September rolls around.

During the upcoming year there will be more chances for service again.  I really think Elder Marion G. Romney was inspired when he said, “Service is the very fiber of an exalted life in the celestial Kingdom…” There are many chances we have in this mortal life to weave the fiber of service. Are we willing to take advantage?  This month we have assignments at the 9th branch, so be looking for chances to sign up.

Basketball is upon us again and we need players to join with us and the third ward to make a team.  We would also like a volunteer to be the team leader (reminding the players of games and being a spokesperson with the stake).  Please talk to me if you can play and if you could be a team leader.

January 11th  2/3 versus 7/CE 9:00 P.M.
January 18th  2/3 versus 4th 8:00 P.M.
January 25th 2/3 versus 6th 9:00 P.M.

There will be a new teaching process that will start at the beginning of the New Year, based on Teaching the Savior’s Way.  We will no longer be teaching out of a manual.  Kellan will be instructing us the new way but here is the schedule of teachers for January.

Family Spotlights
We are the Baty Family! I guess that can be confusing considering three Baty families are a part of this amazing ward. So I'll go with "The original Baty family," as some have referred us to! Lol

We love being a part of this ward! We felt love from the moment we walked through the church doors. There is something very special about this ward & the people in it!
Our family members are JT (Dad), KristaLyn (Mom), McKenzie (10yrs), Porter (8yrs), Brinley (4yrs), & Taylee (2yrs)!
JT works hard for our family. He is employed with Larry H Miller in their accounting department. When JT isn't in the office you can probably find him at any kind of sporting event! Golfing, Jazz game, Utah game, or watching sports on TV with his sports fanatic son Porter!

KristaLyn is a stay at home Mom, which is such a blessing for us. She also has the blessing of working from home from her in home hair salon! She has been doing hair since 2004 and loves every second of it!

McKenzie is our oldest and is such a great helper to us all. She is in 5th grade and her favorite subject in school is science. She takes a dance class and loves going each week. She has a love for animals and has said from a very young age that she wants to be a veterinarian when she grows up.

Porter is our one & only amazing son! He is in 2nd grade and his favorite subject in school is also science! Porter takes after his dad and is all about sports. He plays soccer, baseball, golf, and knows way too many sports facts! Lol

Brinley is our sweet & sassy little thing! She is in preschool this year and has really enjoyed spending time with her friends! Brinley has found her love for dance, just like her big sister!

Taylee is the baby of the family! She is your typical almost three year old. (Move over terrible twos, this
three-nager is moving in! Lol) Her siblings all love to smother her with love. She loves to snuggle and gives the best hugs!

We are so happy to have moved into such a great neighborhood and we look forward to getting to know each of you better!

WE ARE RICHARD & VICKI LYNN FREDERIKSEN
Richard was born in Salt Lake City and adopted when he was seven days old. He has lived in Bountiful all of his life except for when we were serving missions. Vicki Lynn was born in Reno, Nevada and lived in Salt Lake City, Utah, Elko, Nevada, Salt Lake City again and then my family moved to Bountiful when I was in the fourth grade. We both went to and graduated from Bountiful High school.
In 1964 we were married and in 1965 we moved to the house on the corner of 100 East and 3100 South. We have lived in this area for 53+ years. We have been members of the 1st, 7th, 9th and now 2nd ward, all in the same building.
Richard worked for Utah Power and Light as a lineman troubleshooter and retired after 37 years of service. He was in the 4-81st Armor Division for 6 years. Vicki Lynn worked in the banking industry for 10 years and then as an Administrative Assistant. We have served five missions; Australia Adelaide, Mexico Hermosillo, Texas Houston East, Church Office Building in Fleet Administration, and Arkansas Little Rock.
We are blessed to have five children; Daniel, Kelly, Shane, Tiffany and Matthew.  In 1995, we began to sponsor a young lady named Nubia who lives in Mexico. She was 13 years old at that time. She is the only member of her family that has joined the church. She served a mission in Mexico City at the visitor center of the temple. She married a return missionary and has one daughter. We have 17 grandchildren.
It has been a great life, we love the gospel, enjoy doing family history research and love to travel. We also spend time watching our grandchildren and our son Shane play baseball.
