THE GRAPEVINE

Celebrating Thanksgiving is the perfect way to turn our minds and hearts toward the Savior and the celebration of His birth. I have been thinking this year about what it meant for His family to welcome Him into the world and to raise Him in righteousness. We are all the sum of our experience, heritage, and environment. Christ was carefully taught by the example of His earthly parents, what it meant to be faithful and obedient.

Months before He was born His mother said, “Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word.” to the angel Gabriel who foretold the Savior’s birth (Luke 1:26-38). The weeks leading up to His birth were spent traveling to the City of David some 90 miles south of his parent’s home in Nazareth. Eight days after his birth found Joseph and Mary in the Court of the Women at the temple in Jerusalem; obedient to the Law and the prophets. They knew of His divine calling and station, yet they came with doves as a purification sacrifice. Too poor to afford the requisite lamb, they instead presented The Lamb of God at His own house. There was no royal procession, no pomp, no trumpets in their comings and goings. There was instead the quiet, prophetic testimony of Simeon and Anna (Luke2:22-38). Their’s was the kind of personal and abiding joy that followers of The Good Shepherd would share.

What would be the most appropriate circumstances for the birth and presentation of the Creator and Savior of the world? This little family, this mother and father, had to exercise the same faith we all do in the face of such dissapointments and trials. Their example and teaching along with His divine heritage led directly to The Savior’s ability to say “Thy will be done.” For this gift I am eternally thankful.
