                                                                                                                            October 2017
October is the month we have the opportunity to listen to wise and spiritual people at General Conference.  Hopefully, you took the time to listen and hear new perspectives, explanations, and examples that could help you understand God's ways better.  What a blessing it is to have prophets and apostles.

Sometimes when we have something amazing in our lives, we grow accustomed to it, and may even start to disregard it.  We forget or don't realize how empty our lives would be without it.  As a boy I yearned to have a basketball like my friends.  The lack of a basketball left me out of certain associations with my friends, and I could not practice leaving me more awkward in their presence.  To simply go out and buy a basketball was not in the tight family budget, such things were available only as birthday or Christmas gifts.  But it was so very important to my young mind that somehow they relented and agreed to buy this "luxury," but it would be the "family" basketball (the only apparent way to justify this extra expense).  I rejoiced to have my heart's desire.  My life was better somehow.  Now, much older, I have three or four basketballs sitting in the garage, unused.  They are so accessible, so easily obtained that their apparent value has diminished.  It is a crude comparison of basketballs to prophets, but we live among the prophets, and their teachings are also very accessible and freely available.  Please reconsider their great worth and the privilege it is to have easy and frequent access to their words.

Scouting

The scouts have had a great summer. We kicked it off with our week long camp. This year the troop went to Camp Steiner located in the High Unitas. It is hard to believe now but when we arrived there was still snow in shady areas. The glacier fed Scout Lake was described as very cold but our boys and three adults did the cold water check with just a little complaining about the frigid temperatures.

We have spent the last couple of months working on some merit badges, a little hiking, some service,  and just recently held a Court of Honor where all the merit badges that have been earned were awarded and a couple of scouts advanced in rank. Dallen Young advanced to Life Scout, Adam Drotar advanced to Star Scout, Joshua Green was awarded both First and Second Class and Joe Rollins earned his Scout rank.  We have 4 or 5 boys who are ready for their Eagle Projects so it is an exciting time in the scout program.

Scouting is thriving and we are having a great time!

We can turn tragedy into happiness by doing something as simple as donating new colorful socks (the more the better). I will be collecting bright colored and crazy socks for those in need on Wednesday November 1st 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. for my eagle project. We will come to your home to collect these socks so please purchase them beforehand. These will be delivered to the Socks for Sadie non-profit, for more information about this cause please see SocksForSadie.org.   #SocksForSadie  #PeterEagleScout
