December

“... I, Nephi, will show unto you that the tender mercies of the Lord are over all those whom he hath chosen, because of their faith, to make them mighty even unto the power of deliverance.” 1 Nephi 1:20

There is something special about December and the end of the year. I truly love the holidays and time with family, but it also gives me time to reflect and ponder on what has transpired this year coupled with a celebration of the birth and life of our Savior. There is power to the phrase that hindsight is 20/20. I often find that as I look back on the year through the lens of the present, the “tender mercies” of the Lord become apparent. The power is magnified as it is coupled with the spirit and little things are brought to my remembrance.

Seven years ago, I was in optometry school picking site rotations for my final year of schooling. A subtle impression coupled with a series of little events opened a door for us to move to Bountiful and finish my schooling in Utah. The planned six-month adventure turned into a six-year journey that molded a career that would not have been possible without the initial decision based on a subtle prompting. As I look back on the miraculous path, I am humbled to see the tender mercies of the Lord, even in the obstacles and setbacks, which turned out to be pivotal changes for my good.

As we finish out the year with a celebration of the Savior, I hope that we have the opportunity to reflect upon our year, and that as we do so, the Spirit will make readily visible the tender mercies of the Lord. As we feel the love of our Savior, let us reach out and be the tender mercy in the lives of those around us.
