June

The Bell family loves the Ocean. For many years we have travelled to the beautiful uncrowded beaches of the Pacific Northwest. Our favorite place to camp is at the mouth of the mighty Columbia River, this wonderful location has some of the most gorgeous scenery, and treacherous water in the world. The interaction of the flow of the river with the constant tidal forces and currents of the ocean, not to mention the storms for which the locale is famous, creates an area where sandbars and other obstructions to maritime navigation are in a constant state of flux. In fact the waters around this area are so dangerous, the United States Coast Guard placed their one and only Life Boat Training facility there. All Coast Guardsmen that serve on these small but powerful rescue boats must get through this school. It is no wonder that the area around the mouth of the Columbia is known as the “Graveyard of the Pacific.”

In order to enter or exit the Columbia you must pass over “The Bar.” To do this you will encounter some of the most violent water around. But it can be done, and is done every day and night by many, many ships.

To do this safely requires careful attention to a few vital things;
  1. You must stay in the channel, to deviate ever so slightly is to invite disaster.
  2. You must trust your pilot implicitly, they have trained and gone this way many times before, they know how to do this.
  3. You must keep your eyes on the guiding lights, they are there for a reason, not just decoration.
  4. Last but not least—YOU MUST NOT STOP—Keep moving forward no matter what, your rudder only has authority when you are in motion. If you stop your forward progress you are at the mercy of the swirling winds and currents.

If I have learned nothing else recently, I have learned that, just like crossing the Bar of the Columbia, crossing my own personal Bars has been amazingly rough and difficult, sometimes even a bit dangerous. By following the rules above I have made it to safer waters, and I know you can too. Thank you all for your kindness and friendship may the Lord always be your Pilot and may we all get to safe water.

Love you,
Eric Bell

May activity recap:  May 3rd was a combined activity with our YM, and also with the YM/YW from the 7th ward.  Brother Chris Welcker’s parents came and taught us some square dancing and line dancing routines, and it was SO much fun!  Some of us really had to work hard to get out of our comfort zone, but once we did, we didn’t stop dancing.  A big THANK YOU to the Welcker’s for a really fun night!                                                                                                                                                                          On May 10th, we attended a wonderful fireside where testimony was shared through words and dance.  The high school dancers spoke of their trials and how, through faith, friendship, and Christ’s love, they learned to find self-worth and strength in testimony.  It was truly a night where the spirit was felt and everyone left feeling uplifted.
May 17th was our Random Acts of Service night.  We went all around Bountiful and left little toys on playgrounds, flowers on people’s cars, and quarters at vending machines with little notes for whoever found the items letting them know they can keep them, and with some positive words of encouragement.  We ended the night by going to the Welcome Home Assisted Living Center and visiting the residents there and bringing them cookies.  This fun night of service was a favorite for all of us!
May 24th we went to As You Wish Pottery in Farmington and picked out and painted our own piece of pottery.  The girls are SO creative and artistic and we were so very impressed with their mad skills!  Each pottery piece turned out so beautifully!
May 31st will be an end of school bonfire at Natalie Watkins home.  We are so grateful that she has invited us to her home one last time to enjoy each other’s company (and smore’s!)  before she moves.  We will so miss you all, Watkins family!

Thanks to all that have shared to this point and we look forward to hearing from others in the future.

Congratulations to our Seniors

Brynn Bennion:  Brynn has had a wonderful high school experience. Being involved in many different activities has given her opportunities to learn and grow.  She enjoyed being on the WX soccer team, the WX track and field team and in the orchestra as a cellist. Brynn has also been involved in student government this year as the student body designer. This gave her a chance to use her creativity in coming up with designs for t-shirts and school dance posters. She took 2 years of Chinese and has been coached by her sister Alisa who served a mission in Taiwan. Brynn has been a great student and often she studied late into the night to complete her homework. She has been blessed with great friends to share in her high school experience.
Brynn has 4 brothers and 3 sisters. She began high school with brothers and sisters at home, but she is now the only child at home and the only child living in Utah. This year she traveled to Chicago to see LeAnne. Brynn has a list of places to go to visit her other brothers and sisters.
Brynn will attend Utah State in the fall. She also plans on serving a mission after a semester or two of college. She looks forward to serving anywhere, but secretly she would love to go Chinese speaking.
Brynn will also graduate from seminary. She has had tremendous seminary teachers throughout the years. She has been blessed by attending seminary, learning through the Spirit, adding to her gospel knowledge and strengthening her testimony.
As parents, we are so grateful to have Brynn as the youngest member of our family. We sure do love her!  She has been a delight to have in our home. She is an influence for good everywhere she goes.

JAYCEE EHLERS:  Jaycee graduated from Seminary and Woods Cross High with Honors. She dedicated all 3 years to the Theater Department, spending many late nights, early weekends and long school days practicing for their shows. She had a great time developing her singing, dancing and acting talents as she played a Chimney Sweep in Mary Poppins, a Flying Monkey in The Wiz and a Silly Girl in Beauty and the Beast, along with many other roles in each fall, spring and "big" show's. It was a great end of her high school theater career as Beauty and the Beast won Best Show at the High School Theater awards this year! Jaycee also sang in the Concert Choir which she loved.

Jaycee plans now to commute to Utah Valley University where she will major in English with the goal of teaching high school. She would love to teach English, history and dance. We are so very proud of you Jaycee, we love you!

Evan Young:  Evan is obviously very excited to serve the Lord in the Australia, Sydney North Mission. He has been planning on serving a mission his whole life and is grateful to have survived his crazy teen years to be able to do it. He has been living with his older brother for the past 6 months which has prepared him to be away from home. We are proud of Evan's decision to serve a mission and know that his mother looking down from heaven is pleased as well.

Evan is one of the best cooks in our family.  He often introduces new recipes, and cooks for special occasions and holidays. His favorite thing to bake is cookies.  He's done his own laundry for years and is one of the most particular members of the family when it comes to cleanliness; he is definitely prepared temporally to serve his mission.

Evan worked hard and put in some last minute efforts to get the requirements for his Eagle completed. He has enjoyed the scouting program and is grateful to the leaders, family and friends that have helped him achieve his goals.

By the time this is printed Evan will have graduated from Woods Cross High School, where he participated in the award-winning concert choir and completed an internship with a local dermatologist.  During his sophomore and junior years, he played lacrosse and often led the team in points scored.  In 2015-16 he made the All-State Team and was voted MVP.

While busy with school and sports he consistently managed to work as well, with experience at Spanky's, Lee's Grocery, Vivint Solar and Five Guy's Burgers and Fries. His summer is going to be full of work and preparing himself spiritually, mentally and financially for his upcoming mission. He will enter the MTC, August 16, 2017.
